Recap of Missouri Autism Summit 2011
On February 5, a dedicated group of parents, providers, and policy makers braved the weather to come together in Jefferson City for the third annual Missouri Autism Summit.
This event is unique in that it is not a workshop or a conference format, but a open floor discussion with guided topics, which ranged from the new autism insurance law to private sector groups that offer autism supports and resources.
In the morning session, representatives from a local congressman’s office, the Office of Autism and the Missouri Department of Insurance (DIFP) were on hand to give briefings on federal health care, state budget outlook, and the implementation of the new autism insurance law. Attendees also provided general updates from the state-wide autism community. Providers gathered for an in-depth session on insurance credentialing, billing, and coding, led by health care executives. Families were also addressed by Representative Jeff Grisamore, the chairman of the new Missouri House Special Standing Committee on Disability Services.
While much of the day’s focus was centered on autism insurance benefits and how families can access them, the group also discussed the importance of building private resources and supports, which do not rely on government funding. Several regional programs were highlighted, including a private disabilities ministry out of Springfield, Missouri that offers supports to churches creating their own local disability programs or autism programs.
Overall, the most touted benefit from attendees was the ability to network with others in the autism community. This is precisely why the Missouri Autism Summit was created - to give an opportunity for motivated advocates to convene and collaborate. The beginning of any great advancement starts with sharing an idea and following up with determination - thanks to all those who made the day successful!
